On NPR today - Just Breathe: Body Has A Built-In Stress Reliever

I just love it when I turn on my radio in the morning and hear more about yoga in mainstream media. WELL, let me clarify that... POSITIVE things about yoga! :)

Here is an excerpt of the piece here, courtesy of NPR.org. (Thanks to the author of this piece, Gretchen Cuda!)

"There are plenty of ways to relieve stress — exercise, a long soak in a hot bath, or even a massage. But believe it or not, something you're doing right now, probably without even thinking about it, is a proven stress reliever: breathing.

As it turns out, deep breathing is not only relaxing, it's been scientifically proven to affect the heart, the brain, digestion, the immune system — and maybe even the expression of genes."

Ahhhhh, take a deep breath and enjoy it!

  1. I heard that this morning too. I knew about how the relaxation response affects the nervous system and immune system but now I'm really curious to learn more about it's effect on gene expression. Just a little more evidence that yoga can be good medicine!

  2. Thanks for your comment and for stopping by, Lisa. I too had known about the relaxation response (and sometimes forget about it too!) but am also looking forward to learning more about the effect on genes... we continue to learn so much more about yoga! BTW, LOVE your blog, especially the posting about Fundamentals For a Healthy Spine.
